Black girl magic

June 29, 2020

They told us , you are free
that my ancestor fought to end slavery
that we no longer have to cut sugar cane or pick cotton
But I ask myself am I really free
or am I still bound to your negativity
your opinion, what you think of me
who you think I am
what you think I should be
hasty stereotypes, passed from
generation to generation
placed on me
you have freed by body
but my mind is still bound
by the thought that any day I could be shot for being brown
my soul is chained by the perception that blackness is next to
whiteness that my color is a perception of beauty unattainable
And I still wonder how far we’ve come in this world
When I hear, You’re pretty for a dark skin girl.
